GENEALOGY & FAMILY HISTORY RESEARCH
Connecting with your Louisiana Creole heritage, or other heritage by researching your
family ancestry is both rewarding and informative.  The search for your ancestors and
creating a family tree may be a task that takes many years to complete, so be advised, this
is not a process that is usually completed very quickly...it takes time, patience, and fortitude.
However, the satisfaction of finding an ancestor and adding them to your family tree offers a
thrilling experience and a most rewarding feeling of discovery.
  • Begin with the information you already know regarding your paternal and maternal
ancestor:  surnames, given names, women maiden names, places of birth, birth dates,
death dates, place of death, full names of all siblings.

  • Ask your family members questions.  It is to your advantage to compile a list of
questions which will focus on the information you are trying to find out.  You should
exhaust your own family's knowledge of relatives. Older family members are very
valuable resources of information.  Interview them and take notes, ask your questions
(you may also wish to record your oral histories).  Ask about their childhood; what do
they remember about their childhood; what were the names of the relatives that they
were around during their childhood; how old were you when your father or mother
    passed away?

  • Always try to obtain copies of photographs, birth certificates, death certificates,
baptismal records, and don't forget to ask about family bibles.  Many family bibles
have written information which may lead you to other sources.

  • Cross-reference with other relatives.  Review your findings of one relative with
another relative to refresh their memory with the possibility of obtaining additional
    information.

  • Always check various spellings of your ancestors' surnames.  Often times you will find
variations in the spelling of a surname in earlier records.  Many spellings of surnames
were changed by individuals, some changed by data input incorrectly, and many
ancestors were unable to spell their names correctly.

  • Remember to document your sources.  Record all information that you have found.  It
is important that you have a place to store your documents, notes, pictures, letters,
etc.  You may choose to use a notebook, a computer with an ancestral software
program, index cards, a photo album, or other record keeping sources.

A Louisiana Creole heritage search source to start at is the Genealogy Department of the
Louisiana Creole Heritage Center (CHC)  The CHC welcomes you to search their database.
Currently, they have individuals born before 1920.  We recommend this site as a source to
begin your Louisiana Creole heritage ancestral search.

The world wide web (Internet) is huge and may be difficult in knowing where to start.  LHC
recommends, strictly for research and to see what is out there for your surnames, a site
called Family Search which is sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
(LDS).  This web site allows you to search various resources and you may find a LDS
genealogy research library known as the Family History Center (FHC) in your area.  If you
find a FHC in your area, pay them a visit!
